Premiered at Zankel Hall, Carnegie Hall in May 2018, “Four Seasons” is a collaboration between composer Georgia Shreve and video artist Halstead Wells. Time-lapse footage from iconic Manhattan terraces is woven to Shreve’s concerto, creating a visual-musical architecture in which weather, light, and city rhythm appear to respond directly to the score. The result is both urban and lyrical: a portrait of New York as an emotional climate, not just a skyline.
In Georgia’s Words
“I wanted to find beauty and promise in the city’s changing light, and to let the music feel as though it were moving the seasons themselves. Even in difficult times, this piece reaches toward optimism.”
About the Work
Four Seasons extends Shreve’s interest in emotional form by pairing her Piano Concerto (2015) with a visual field built from time-lapse photography across New York terraces. Rather than treating image as backdrop, the project operates as a true duet between composition and moving architecture. The city is not “illustrated.” It is interpreted, accelerated, and re-heard.
The collaboration began after Shreve’s concerto performance at Carnegie Hall, when video artist Halstead Wells proposed a joint work. Multiple cameras were installed across terrace vantage points to capture long-duration changes in weather, cloud movement, foliage, and urban light. Those stills were then sequenced into fluid temporal compression, allowing days and seasons to turn within minutes. Set against Shreve’s orchestral language, the visual arc reads as kinetic counterpoint: transitions in harmony and texture seem to pull the city through phases of bloom, heat, decay, and renewal.
What gives the piece its force is tonal clarity. The work is expansive but not grandiose, technically intricate yet emotionally accessible. Its governing gesture is hopeful, finding lyric possibility inside concrete density. In performance, audiences experience a layered perception of time: concert time, cinematic time, seasonal time, and personal memory, all converging in one frame.
Premiered at Zankel Hall, Carnegie Hall (May 2018) and presented by the Manhattan Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, Four Seasons stands as a defining example of Shreve’s interdisciplinary voice, where orchestral momentum and visual storytelling merge into a single optimistic civic poem.
