Portraits of the 20th Century: Visions and Voices (2022)

10-part oratorio for choir and orchestra

Shreve’s musical exploration of human tragedies in the 20th Century. The text is largely original, with a number of parts containing quotes from other famous writers and historians.

Portraits of the 20th Century evokes the significance and timelessness of some of the darkest moments of our last century,” says Georgia Shreve. The year 2000 closed a century during which the maladies and horrors of our civilization stood out in stark relief. The 12th century writing of Hildegard of Bingen contains prescient warnings about the desecration of the environment. The ironic setting of The Art of War by Sun Tzu from the 6th century BC evokes the decades of gruesome war in the 20th.   James Agee’s more recent text vividly chronicles the poignant experiences of the depression. In the last two decades alone, we have witnessed the recurrence of all of these nightmares. My oratorio, Portraits of the 20th Century, speaks not just to the last century, but to all centuries.”

Lavinia and Anna Komnene (2021)

World Premiere performance: multimedia, semi-staged concert at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall on April 26, 2022.

A pair of semi-operatic oratorios giving voice to two strong yet largely unrecognized female figures in early history and literature. The concert, Courageous Women of Antiquity, was conceived with the intention of shining a light on two very different women whose impacts have been historically diminished.

Composer’s Note: From the artwork of prominent artist Barnaby Fitzgerald (son of Robert Fitzgerald, the distinguished, world-renowned translator of the Aeneid)  Shreve has created a video of classical imagery re-conceived with a contemporary vision, providing a powerful visual back drop for the performance.

Paradise (2016)

World Premiere – Zankel Hall,
Carnegie Hall; May 2016

Oratorio for Soprano, Tenor, Baritone,
and Chamber Orchestra

This oratorio for soprano, tenor, baritone and chamber orchestra is about Dante and his beloved Beatrice. After passing through Hell and Purgatory, they experience the glories of Paradise and its wondrous sites. They encounter many fascinating  characters along the way.    The performance featured projections of Dali’s brilliant paintings expressing his vision of story.  It is also a hymn to music, beauty, love, human virtues and the ineffable spirit. It still makes sense and has relevance seven centuries after it was conceived.”

The miracle of this final Cantica of the Divine Comedy is that it is at once poetry, autobiography, pilgrimage, travelogue, theology, allegory, history, cosmology, and a treatise on politics, religion, morality, the arts, the imagination, and Dante’s own creative process and development.
